Running out of fuel happens to careful drivers as well as hopeful ones. A gauge that reads optimistic, a diversion that adds twenty miles, a car that drinks more than it should in traffic. However it happened, the fix is the same: fuel brought to the car, where it sits.
Ring the dispatcher with your location and what the car takes, petrol or diesel, and a driver is sent out to you. Where the car starts and runs once fuelled, that is the job done at the roadside and you are on your way.
If you have put the wrong fuel in, do not start the engine, and if you already have, stop somewhere safe as soon as you can. Wrong fuel is a different job: the tank needs draining and refilling rather than topping up, so tell the dispatcher exactly what went in and how much.
On a motorway, safety comes before everything. Get behind the barrier, keep everyone away from the carriageway, and if you are stuck in a live lane dial 999 first. We attend once the scene is safe and the relevant authority has cleared the lane.
While you wait, keep the car visible: hazards on, sidelights on after dark, and everyone waiting away from the carriageway side. Do not keep cranking an empty car, because running the starter flat only adds a flat battery to an empty tank. Once fuel is in, most cars start within a few turns.
Occasionally a car that has run dry still will not start, usually because air needs clearing from the fuel system or the pump has been damaged by running empty. If that happens the driver will tell you straight, and the car can go on the flatbed to your garage instead.
Our run out of fuel page walks through what to do while you wait, and the roadside assistance page covers the other fixes we carry out where the car sits.

Questions people ask
- What fuel can you deliver?
- Petrol or diesel. Tell the dispatcher which the car takes when you ring, and if you are not sure, give the registration and we can usually work it out.
- I have put the wrong fuel in, what should I do?
- Do not start the engine. If you already have, pull over somewhere safe and switch off. Ring us and say what went in and roughly how much, because the tank will need draining and refilling rather than a simple top up.
- Can you deliver fuel to a motorway breakdown?
- Yes, once it is safe. Get everyone behind the barrier first, and dial 999 if you are anywhere near a live lane. We attend once the lane is cleared.
- How much does fuel delivery cost?
- It depends on where you are and what the job involves, and you are told the flat figure on the call before a driver is sent. There is nothing added at the roadside.
- Do I need breakdown cover to use you?
- No. We work pay as you go, so you pay one agreed price for the call-out with no membership and nothing to renew.
