The early signs most drivers miss
The first symptom is usually a slightly slower crank on a cold morning: the engine turns over for a fraction of a second longer before catching. Next come electrical oddities, because the battery is the buffer for the whole system. Headlights dim noticeably at idle then brighten when you rev, the stereo resets, the clock loses time, electric windows move slowly, or stop start stops working altogether. Stop start disabling itself is a particularly reliable early indicator, because the car's battery management system actively monitors the state of health and switches the feature off when it drops.
What the battery warning light actually means
The red battery symbol on the dashboard is not a low battery light. It indicates that the charging system is not putting current back in, which usually points at the alternator, the drive belt or the wiring rather than the battery itself. If it comes on while driving, you are running on stored charge only, and you typically have somewhere between twenty minutes and an hour before the engine stops. Switch off anything you do not need such as heated screens, air conditioning and the stereo, and head for somewhere safe rather than trying to finish the journey.
Physical checks anyone can do
With the engine off, look at the battery itself. Terminals should be clean and tight, with no white or blue crusty deposits, which are corrosion and add resistance. The casing should be flat sided, not bulging, and there should be no cracks or damp patches. Check the earth strap between the battery, body and engine, because a corroded earth causes symptoms identical to a dead battery. Wiggle the terminal clamps by hand: if either moves, tighten it, as a loose clamp alone can prevent starting.
Testing properly
A multimeter across the terminals with the engine off should read around 12.6 volts on a fully charged battery. Around 12.4 volts is roughly 75 per cent charged, and 12.0 volts or below is effectively flat. Start the engine and the reading should rise to between 13.7 and 14.7 volts, which confirms the alternator is charging. A reading that does not rise means a charging fault, and a reading above around 15 volts suggests a failing voltage regulator. Voltage alone does not measure capacity, though, so a garage load test or conductance test is the only way to know whether the battery can still deliver the cranking amps the engine needs.
How long a battery should last
In UK conditions most lead acid car batteries last four to six years. Short journeys shorten that considerably, because a cold start uses a large amount of charge that a ten minute drive never fully replaces. Cars fitted with stop start use enhanced flooded or absorbent glass mat batteries, which cost more and must be replaced with the same type, and on many vehicles the new battery has to be registered with the car's electronics so the charging strategy matches it. Fitting an ordinary battery to a stop start car shortens its life dramatically.
Winter and the cars that get caught out
Cold weather reduces the chemical output of a battery while simultaneously increasing the effort needed to turn a cold engine, which is why so many batteries fail on the first hard frost. Vehicles used for short school runs, cars left standing for weeks, and anything with an aftermarket alarm, tracker or dashcam wired to permanent live are the most exposed. If a car is going to stand for more than a fortnight, a smart trickle charger keeps the battery healthy for a fraction of the cost of replacing it.
When to replace rather than recharge
Replace the battery if it will not hold charge after a full mains charge, if it fails a load test, if the casing is swollen or leaking, or if it is more than about five years old and has already left you stranded once. A battery that has been deeply discharged several times has usually lost permanent capacity even if it appears to recover. If the car will not start where it stands and the battery is clearly finished, a recovery operator can either fit a replacement at the roadside or move the vehicle to a garage.
