Multi-storey car park recovery and low clearance access

A car that fails inside a multi-storey or underground car park is a different job from a roadside breakdown, because a standard recovery truck physically cannot reach it. Knowing how these jobs are done saves a lot of wasted time.

Why height is the whole problem

Most multi-storey and underground car parks have a headroom limit between 1.9 and 2.1 metres, sometimes lower at the entrance barrier or on the ramps. A conventional flatbed recovery truck is far taller than that even unloaded, so it cannot enter, and there is no clever way around a concrete beam. That is why the first question any competent operator asks about a car park job is the posted height restriction, and why sending the wrong vehicle wastes an hour for everyone.

How these recoveries are actually done

The usual approach is to move the vehicle out of the structure first, then load it normally on level ground outside. Depending on the situation, that means fitting skates or dollies under the wheels so a locked or seized car can be manoeuvred, using a low profile winch unit or a compact recovery vehicle designed for underground access, or in some cases pushing the vehicle out with several people where the ramp gradient and layout allow. Once outside, the job becomes an ordinary flatbed load. Steep helical ramps, tight turning circles and parking bays that leave no space either side are the practical challenges.

Common reasons cars need recovering from car parks

Flat batteries top the list, particularly at airports and long stay parks where a car has stood for a fortnight. Cars left at shopping centres over Christmas, vehicles that will not come out of park because of an electrical fault, seized brakes after standing in the wet, flat tyres, lost keys, and cars that were driven in with a fault and simply will not restart all feature regularly. Some of these can be fixed in situ: a jump start or a wheel change takes minutes and avoids recovery altogether, so it is worth asking whether a roadside fix is possible before committing to a full extraction.

Talking to the car park operator

Most car parks require notice before a recovery vehicle attends, and many charge for the time the car has occupied a space. Some have their own preferred contractor, and a few restrict access to certain hours to avoid disrupting traffic flow. Speak to the car park management as soon as you know the vehicle is not moving, get a name, and ask what they need from you. Barriers may need to be raised manually, and payment or exit validation has to be sorted before the car can leave the structure.

What to tell your recovery operator when you call

Give the exact name and address of the car park, the level the vehicle is on, and the posted height restriction at the entrance, which is displayed on a sign and usually on the barrier. Say whether the car rolls, steers and brakes, whether you have the key, and whether it is in gear or the electric parking brake is engaged. Describe the space it is parked in: nose in against a wall in a tight bay is a much harder job than a corner space with room in front. Photographs of the entrance sign, the ramp and the parked car make the quote accurate first time.

Costs and time

Car park extractions typically cost more than a straightforward roadside job because they take longer and need additional equipment and often a second person. The time varies enormously with the layout: a ground floor space near an exit may take minutes, while a vehicle on level five of a tight helical park can take well over an hour. Add the car park's own charges for the period the vehicle has been there. Getting the vehicle out promptly is worth doing, because daily parking charges continue to accrue while the car sits there.

Avoiding the situation

If a car is going to stand for more than a week or two, particularly in an airport car park in winter, the battery is the thing most likely to catch you out. Disconnect nothing, but consider a solar trickle charger, and switch off dashcams and aftermarket trackers wired to permanent live if you can. Park nose out where possible, because it makes any subsequent recovery far easier, and note the level and bay number. It sounds trivial, but a driver who can be told exactly where the car sits saves time you are paying for.
