Searches for recovery truck hire tend to come from two groups. Some want a self-drive flatbed or a trailer to move a project car, a race car or a purchase from a private seller. Others simply need a car moved and assume they have to hire the truck. The second group almost always does better booking a recovery, where the truck, the driver, the loading and the paperwork come as one job.

Licence and weight questions

A car on a flatbed is heavy. Many recovery trucks weigh more than a standard car licence allows once loaded, and towing a car on a trailer brings its own rules on combined weight and trailer brakes. Drivers who passed their test more recently may hold a narrower licence than older drivers. Before hiring anything, check the plated weight of the vehicle and the trailer against the categories on your own licence, and confirm your insurance covers you.

Loading is the hard part

Driving the truck is only half the job. A non-runner has to be winched on straight, with the steering unlocked and the handbrake off. Low cars need shallow ramps or they catch their bumpers. Every wheel then needs strapping so it cannot shift under braking. A poorly secured car can damage itself, the truck and other road users. If you move cars often, already hold the right licence, know how to winch and strap a vehicle, and have somewhere safe to load and unload, hiring can work out well. Track day regulars, classic car owners with their own trailer, and small traders moving stock sometimes fall into this group.

For a single breakdown, an auction purchase, a car going to a garage or a non-runner stuck on a driveway, a driven recovery removes the risk. You do not collect a truck, return it, refuel it or worry about damage to the hire vehicle. You give the address, the destination and details about the car, agree the price and someone else does the lifting.

Comparing the true cost

When pricing self-drive hire, add fuel, insurance excess, deposit, the time to collect and return the truck, and any equipment you need to buy such as straps or a winch remote. Then set that against a single agreed price for a driven job. For a one-off move, the difference is often smaller than it first looks, and the driven job carries none of the loading risk.

Questions to ask either way

For hire: what is the plated weight, is a winch included, what does the insurance exclude, and when must it be back? For a driven recovery: is the price the total, does it include winching a non-runner, and will you ring before arrival? Clear answers to those questions tell you most of what you need to know about the company.
