Broken Suspension Spring Recovery in Birmingham
A broken coil spring is more common than many drivers realise, particularly on cars that see a lot of poor road surfaces or are getting on in years. The usual sign is a loud clunk over bumps, one corner of the car sitting visibly lower than the others, or in more obvious cases, part of the broken spring poking through the wheel arch liner or even catching the tyre.

How to spot it
Beyond the obvious visual clue of a car sitting lower on one corner, a clunking or knocking noise over bumps and potholes that wasn't there before, a scraping or rubbing sound from one wheel, or a noticeably harsher ride on one side are all signs worth checking. If you can safely see into the wheel arch, a snapped spring end is usually fairly obvious.
Why it's not safe to keep driving
A broken spring end can, over time or over a bump, cut into the tyre sidewall, potentially causing a sudden blowout. It also changes the car's handling on that corner, affecting grip and stability, particularly in corners or under braking.

Can I drive slowly to a garage myself if a spring has broken?
We wouldn't recommend it — the broken end can damage the tyre further and the car's handling on that corner is compromised, so recovery is the safer option.
How do I know if it's the spring and not something else in the suspension?
A visibly lower corner combined with a clunking noise over bumps is a strong indicator, but a broken anti-roll bar link or worn shock absorber can cause similar symptoms — we can take a look on scene.
Will the broken spring have damaged my tyre?
It's possible if the broken end has been in contact with it, so we'll check this while we're with you.
Do garages usually replace both springs on an axle?
It's common practice, since springs wear at a similar rate and replacing just one can leave a mismatch in ride height or stiffness.
