Flatbed vs spec-lift vs wheel-lift towing explained

Not every recovery truck works the same way, and the wrong method can risk damaging a car. Here's a plain-English guide to the main types.

Flatbed recovery

A flatbed truck has a full-length deck that tilts and winches down to ground level, so the whole vehicle is loaded on and carried fully off the road. It's generally considered the safest option for any car that doesn't drive, has driveline or steering damage, is very low, or is a modified, classic or high-value vehicle, because none of the wheels touch the road during transport.

Spec-lift recovery

A spec-lift (also called a wheel-lift with a supporting cradle, or a suspended tow) lifts one end of the car — usually the front — using a hydraulic under-lift with cradles that sit under the tyres, while the other end's wheels roll along the ground. This is faster to set up than a flatbed for many jobs and works well for cars that are broken down but structurally fine to have one axle towed, though it's not suitable for four-wheel-drive vehicles unless the driven axle is fully lifted or wheel dollies are used.

Wheel-lift recovery

Wheel-lift is similar in principle to spec-lift — the truck lifts the vehicle by its wheels rather than the axle or chassis — reducing the risk of damage to bumpers, exhausts and underbody trim compared to older-style tow methods. It's commonly used for everyday breakdown recovery on standard cars, especially where a flatbed isn't necessary or can't get access.

Why the method matters for your car

Four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles typically must be transported with all four wheels off the ground, either on a flatbed or with dollies under the non-lifted axle, because towing with any wheels turning can damage the transmission. Electric vehicles almost always need a flatbed, since most manufacturers prohibit towing with any wheels on the ground. Low, wide or modified cars often need a flatbed simply for ground clearance and loading angle.

What a competent recovery operator will check

Before choosing a method, a good operator will ask or check: is it four-wheel drive, is it electric or hybrid, is there any suspension, steering or driveline damage, and how low is the vehicle. If in doubt, they should default to a flatbed rather than risk damage.

What to ask when you book

If your car is 4x4, electric, has a flat tyre on a locked hub, or is a lower or performance model, mention it when you call. It affects which truck gets sent and can avoid a wasted journey if the wrong type turns up.
