1. You call and describe the situation
A good operator will ask your exact location, the vehicle make and model, whether it's driveable, whether anyone is injured, and where you want it taken. Being as accurate as possible here helps them send the right truck first time.
2. You get a price and an ETA
Before dispatch, you should be given an honest estimated time of arrival and a clear price, or at least a clear basis for the price if the job details are still uncertain (for example, a long-distance job where mileage needs confirming).
3. The driver assesses the vehicle on arrival
On site, the recovery driver checks the vehicle's condition, confirms whether it's safe to load, and decides on the loading method — flatbed, spec-lift or wheel-lift — based on what they find, which may differ slightly from what was assumed on the phone.
4. Loading and securing
The vehicle is loaded and secured with straps or chains at multiple points. This takes longer on flatbeds than a simple tow, particularly for low or damaged vehicles, but it's what keeps the car safe in transit.
5. Transport to the destination
You can usually travel with the driver in the cab, subject to space and insurance, or make your own way. The driver will confirm the drop-off address — home, garage, dealership or storage — before setting off.
6. Drop-off and paperwork
On arrival, the vehicle is unloaded and positioned safely. Payment is typically taken on completion unless agreed otherwise, and you should get a receipt. If it's an insurance job, the recovery firm may liaise directly with your insurer or provide documentation for your claim.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I ride in the truck with my car?
- Usually yes, space and insurance permitting, but always ask when booking as it isn't guaranteed on every job.
- How long does a typical recovery take?
- It varies hugely by distance and traffic. Local jobs are often measured in tens of minutes once the truck arrives; long-distance transport can take hours. Ask for a realistic ETA when you book.
- What if the driver arrives and the job is bigger than described?
- A fair operator will explain any change in price or method before proceeding, rather than surprising you at the end.
