Guide

How to prepare a car for transport

A little preparation before the truck arrives can make loading quicker and reduce the risk of anything going wrong in transit.

Remove or secure personal belongings

Take out valuables, documents and anything loose in the boot or cabin. Items can shift during loading and transport, and most recovery firms won't be responsible for loose personal property left in the vehicle.

Check fuel level

There's usually no need to drain fuel for standard transport, but very full tanks add weight and, on some long trailer moves, operators may ask for a lower level. If you're unsure, ask when booking.

Note the vehicle's condition beforehand

Take clear photos of the exterior, interior and any existing damage before the vehicle is loaded. This protects both you and the recovery company by giving an honest record of condition before transport.

Make sure it can be put into neutral

For flatbed loading via winch, the vehicle typically needs to be in neutral with the handbrake released so it can be pulled up the ramps. If the handbrake is stuck on or the gearbox won't move, tell the operator in advance so they can plan for it — this can sometimes need dollies or extra equipment.

Flag anything unusual

Modified suspension, low ground clearance, non-standard wheels, a disconnected battery, or a vehicle that doesn't steer freely — all of this affects how it needs to be loaded. Mentioning it upfront avoids delays or the wrong truck turning up.

Have keys and paperwork ready

Keep the key accessible (even for a non-runner, the steering lock may need releasing), and have any relevant documents — V5C, insurance details for the destination, purchase paperwork if it's a new purchase — ready in case they're needed at drop-off.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to empty the fuel tank before transport?
Not usually for standard recovery or transport, but check with the operator if the tank is very full or the job involves a trailer over a long distance.
What if the handbrake is seized on?
Tell the recovery firm before they arrive — it may need dollies or a different loading approach rather than a straightforward winch.
Should I take photos before the car is loaded?
Yes, it's a sensible habit — a dated record of condition protects you if there's ever a dispute about damage.
