Recovering an electric vehicle safely

Electric vehicles bring some genuinely different recovery considerations compared with a petrol or diesel car. Here's what typically applies.

Why EVs usually can't be towed conventionally

Most manufacturers advise against towing an EV with any wheels on the ground, because the electric motors can generate current when the wheels turn, even with the vehicle switched off, which can potentially damage the drivetrain or, in rare cases, create a fire risk. This is why flatbed recovery is the standard approach for EVs.

What a competent recovery driver checks

Before loading, a recovery driver should check whether the vehicle can be put into a 'neutral' or transport mode via the dashboard, whether the parking brake can be released electronically, and whether there's any visible damage to the battery pack — particularly after a collision.

After a collision or fire risk

If an EV has been in a significant collision and there's any concern about battery damage, this should be treated cautiously — some recovery firms have specific protocols or quarantine areas for potentially damaged EV batteries, and in more serious cases the fire service may need to be involved. This isn't the norm for a routine breakdown, but it's worth knowing it exists as a possibility.

Running out of charge

An EV that has simply run out of charge isn't unsafe — it just needs recovering like any non-runner, typically to the nearest suitable charge point or your home, via flatbed. It cannot usually be given a 'few litres to get you going' equivalent at the roadside, since there's no quick top-up.

Weight considerations

EVs are often heavier than equivalent petrol or diesel cars due to the battery pack. This is generally accounted for by recovery operators, but it's part of why the right truck and straps matter — an under-specified setup isn't appropriate for a heavier vehicle.

What to tell the operator when you call

Confirm the make and model, whether it's fully electric or a plug-in hybrid, and whether there's been any collision or visible damage. This helps them send a suitably equipped flatbed and plan the right destination.

Frequently asked questions

Can an EV ever be towed with wheels on the ground?
Generally no — most manufacturers require flatbed transport due to the risk of damaging the electric motors or battery system.
Is it dangerous if my EV just runs out of charge?
No, it's not inherently dangerous — it simply needs flatbed recovery to a charge point or home, the same as any breakdown.
Does EV recovery cost more?
It can vary depending on truck specification and destination, but the process is broadly the same as any flatbed recovery — ask for a clear quote when you call.
